Occupational therapists (OTs) are licensed professionals trained in helping individuals develop, strengthen or regain the skills needed to engage in everyday activities. For children, handwriting is an important occupation! It is a regular part of the school day whether through pre-writing activities such as coloring and tracing, through discrete handwriting instruction, as a way to identify themselves and their belongings, or to demonstrate and communicate what has been learned. Older students need cursive handwriting for functional tasks such as signing a driver's license and other legal documents. Learning cursive also allows students to read historical documents and handwritten cards from grandparents!

Why would they benefit from learning handwriting from an OT?!
Occupational Therapists (OTs) are uniquely qualified by the nature of our professional training to teach handwriting to any student. We understand development as well as the sensory, motor and cognitive building blocks that serve as the foundation for functional handwriting. See below to understand more about how an OT automatically assesses and can address so many different skill areas, making us valuable specialist for handwriting instruction.

Focus is not just on learning letter formations! Students also engage in activities that help develop and/or reinforce critical foundational skills (fine motor, visual motor, motor planning, etc) . The OT lens allows for constant assessment and focus on any delays or weaknesses observed in these skill areas.

Core strength and shoulder girdle stability are necessary in order to have a good refined hand movements.
This refers to the small muscle movements of the hands and fingers which are needed for efficient pencil use, including grasp, control, and rotation of a writing utensil.
This important skill includes the ability to use both hands together and comes into play when writing with one hand and stabilizing the paper with the other.
Sufficient strength in the hands and fingers assists students in maintaining an efficient grasp and helps in avoiding fatigue with sustained periods of writing.
This is key to helping students understand how much pressure to assert when writing, maintaining a proper sitting position and controlling movements with the writing utensil.
Motor planning is the ability to plan, organize and execute unfamiliar motor tasks. With handwriting, such tasks include formation of letters and stroke sequences.
Efficient movement of the eyes, including tracking and shifting of gaze, are needed for proper spacing, copying from the board and maintaining place on paper while writing.
This includes spatial awareness, form constancy and the ability to distinguish similar letters and numbers. A student also needs this skill for functional tasks such as copying from a model.
This is the use of visual. information for motor output. This skill is critical to a student's ability to copy letters, accurately space words, and properly orient letters to the lines on the paper and within margins.
This refers to higher level cognitive processes that help a person to plan, organize and perform tasks. Many of these are needed for successful handwriting, some of which include: working memory for letter formation sequences, organization for written work on paper, attention to writing task and details, and self monitoring of letter size and spacing.
Handwriting instruction has benefits across other educational areas!
